Java dump analyzers

Heapdump analyzer and Coredump analyzer are two nice utilities from IBM. They provide a nice GUI of all the available threads, their stacktraces and any deadlock situations. I guess it goes without saying that they support the dumps generated by Websphere though I have not tried using them with other servers.

SQL Developer

As we happen to use Oracle database, I use this for connecting to our databases. It is a free application from Oracle and provides a nice UI for executing SQL quries, debugging/coding stored procedures with syntax highlighting, code folding with auto completion on table/view names and many more. From verstion 1.5 (may be earlier) onwards it works as an IDE for web-applications developed using servlets and jsps.

OracleInstantClient
Command line version of oracle client. Has got interesting features like exporting the query results to html etc.

TeraTerm

• A freeware telnet and SSH client
• Supports macros

UnxUtils

Set of ports of reqular unix commands like ls, grep, more etc. This is a freeware and one need to just unzip to start using

RSSOwl

A freeware RSS feed reader developed in Java, based on eclipse IDE. Just unzip it to start using

7-Zip

A freeware zip/unzip utility. The developers claim that their 7z format gives better compressing compared to all other formats. One have a choice to go for an installable or for a zipped distribution

CCleaner

I don't like leaving any traces of what sites I visited, what documents I opened recently etc. If you are like me CCleaner is for you. It can clear all history, uninstall applications and fix registry issues also. An alternative portable version is also available here.

Launchy

I am a keyboard shortcuts freak. 'Run' dialog gives me access to installed applications only, for others one need to navigate or keep a shortcut on desktop. With Launchy you can configure all these applications and once this is done every program is at your figer tips

A free dictionary, indispensable tool if your vocabulary is not too good

NK2View

This nice little application comes in handy when there are changes to email addresses in your contact list and Outlook always gets the old address. Using this utility we can edit/remove outlook autocomplete entries

OpenedFilesView

I many times faced a problem in windows, saying some particular file/dir is locked by some process and I can not delete it. Unless I restart (probably re-login) it does not release the lock. This utility gives a list of all open files and their respective processes

Utility to have in depth look into your windows process hierarchy

VLC

A freeware media player, which supports playlists, can play many formats and videos also. One have a choice to go for an installable or for a zipped distribution

RegShot

Another freeware utility for taking snapshots of your registry and for comparing for any changes. Very useful to find if someone is installing or palying with your system

OpenProj
Free alternative to microsoft project planner. Have used only occassionally and so far worked fine. Needs jdk 1.5 or more.

SquirrelSql
Java based database client for all databases which have a type 2 jdbc driver. Have used with Oracle and features it provides like syntax highlighting (identifies sql syntax errors), session caching, history are very good. Only issue I found apart from speed is its inability to get the source code of packages/procedures.

Memoranda
Java based free daily notes (dairy) manager and scheduler. Have not explored its features yet.

TightVNC
A tool for sharing your windows desktop over lan. Very useful for simple team collaboration when video conference is not available.

GhostScript & GSView
Freeware tools for opening postscript files and pdf files. One can also extract individual parts of pdf documents using GSView.

Artweaver
Freeware alternative for PaintShop. Haven't used it so can not comment on the features.

JDiskReport
This is a free utility developed in java for displaying nice graphical view of disk usage.

PSTPassword
Never realised that the outlook password encryption is so weak. This utility generates a list of alternative passwords for opening password protected pst files to open in outlook.

xnresourceeditor
Tool for extracting icons and modifying text messages in a exe/dll file.

PortaPutty
Alternative to putty, which stores the sessions info on local file system instead of registry. Very useful while moving from one system to another without losing ones settings.

wget
A port for windows to download files from command line.

DirSync
DirSync is a small utility for file and folder synchronization, which can be used to synchronize the content of one or many folders recursively.
